Guantanamo Bay is an estuary and protected inlet on the southern coast of eastern Cuba opening out onto the clear blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Surrounded by low mountains in the distance that create a localized rain-shadow, the rugged scrub desert still manages to contain a diverse set of habitats within a small area measuring a mere five by six miles including mangrove margins, seagrass beds, coral reefs, tidal marshes, scrub cactus forests, palm and cactus covered hills, and pebbled beaches amid seaside fossilized coral cliffs.
